September 06 Martha's Musings

Tomorrow is Labor Day. In the USA, we celebrate Labor Day as a day off from work, which some folks refer to as “labor”. The church office, as well as many businesses, schools, committees, etc., will be closed in honor of the day. When I was growing up, Labor Day had a special tag attached to it for school children. In Texas, school always started the day after Labor Day, which gave the teachers and the students a short “work week” in which to get back in the swing of things. I attended Catholic school, and even the nuns got a kick out of the shortened week. You would think after you had a three-month summer vacation that you would be rested enough to hang in there for a full five-day work week. I guess the convenience of this holiday, coming along where it does in the calendar, was just too special to ignore. Personally, I always looked forward to school. Since I wasn’t Catholic, I did not get to see my friends over the summer months, and I missed them. Plus, I really liked school. My mother taught fifth grade in Irving for her entire teaching career, and my oldest son has taught auto mechanics at the high school and junior college level in Georgetown, CA for numerous years. I have a sister-in-law and a niece who are both school librarians, so school and its related activities have always been a part of my extended life. My hope for everyone this time of year is that enthusiasm holds out, friendships flourish, and minds everywhere, both young and old, benefit from what school has to offer. I pray for God’s blessings on them all, and hope that they all do their best and enter the Christmas break with a clear conscience and good grades. And Christmas will be here before you know it!
