October 13 Martha's Musings

I am learning that television is a veritable trove of ideas for my little blog. While watching a news report about the various polls being done regarding the two Presidential candidates, the topic came up about specific issues where the two differ. The most important issue, or at least the one that was stated to be the most important thing that Americans are interested in, was the differences between the candidates regarding the economy. I just stared at the TV screen: the economy? Seriously? Now I am a normal woman, and I understand that the concern for economic stability is something that everyone is concerned about. But my mind was focused on other issues. In my little mind, things like the rise in crime and the very serious drug problem in our country seemed more important than handling finances. My concerns are more of a spiritual nature – what about God? What about personal morality? Aren’t we all, collectively, responsible for what we tolerate in society? When I was growing up, the shows with “adult content”, were not aired until after 9pm. The theory was that children would be in bed by then and would thus not see the “adult” shows. To be truthful, these same shows were mild by today’s standards. I remain amazed at the things that TV executives seem to think that the rest of us want to see. Even commercials are invasive – medications for things like sexually transmitted diseases are common. Folks may not agree with me, but I do not want to explain adult things to a child. That is why there is a difference between children and adults, as children have not yet evolved enough to understand adult topics. We should all know that this is God’s plan. I believe that the Lord expects all the grownups in His world to take care of all the children in His world, and protect their right to innocence. I do not believe that God wants humanity to focus on money. I also believe that once we focus on others - once we judge morality to be more important than money – once our individual efforts reflect our collective faith – then, and only then, will the economic issues be resolved. Focusing on the economy without addressing the effect immorality has on civilization is ludicrous as well as ineffective. Our God expects more of His people.
